And for all that time, two women made sure she knew she didn’t belong in it.
Her mother-in-law, and the woman her husband almost married. They never say the cruel thing where anyone can hear. They save it for the half-second the room turns, the instant Thoreau steps out, and by the time he’s back, there’s no mark on anything. There’s never any mark.
Thoreau would tell you he adores his wife. He’d even mean it. But every time she tries to tell him what his mother does, what the other woman does, he waves it away. Don’t make this into something.

Days into the silence, an unknown number lights up Thoreau’s phone.
He answers on the first ring, praying it’s her.
It isn’t. It’s a stranger, calling from a hospital. There’s been an accident.
And for the first time in his life, his name can’t fix what’s on the other end of the line. He has a jet. An army of lawyers. More money than he can count. And none of it can buy the one thing he’d burn all of it for.
