Black Lion belongs to a Native American clan that has lingered for generations in a mist-bound exile, neither living nor dead, punished for a transgression committed long before his lifetime.
In 1892 the task of freeing them falls to him, and it depends on a sacred song he must recover, then sing in perfect harmony with the woman who first entrusted it to him.
Traveling to London with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, he meets Suzette Joselyn, an opera singer's daughter already pledged to another man and a woman he was never meant to want.
When she later arrives in America carrying a child and deserted by the man she was to marry, Black Lion offers a marriage of convenience to protect her baby, and she cannot turn him down.
She does not yet know that the warrior she has bound herself to still carries an ancient duty, one that may demand he choose the salvation of his people over the woman he has come to love.
