When her favourite Aunt is diagnosed with cancer Julie Brown puts her travel plans and studies on hold, and returns to the quaint, historic town of Covington, Georgia to live with her at the Lake House.
Julie always wanted to make something of her life. Shes ambitious and high achieving. Yet at every step along the way, shes been knocked down. Her father was killed in Kenya before she was born, her mother died while she was still young. She recently discovered that neither one of them was her biological family. And now she has an entirely new family on the other side of the world who she’s excited to meet.
Despite this latest blow, she’s determined to help Aunt Rita fight her cancer. At the hospital she runs into a man she hasnt seen since high school. He was a troubled kid and lived with them briefly when her mother tried to help him. Shes always seen him as a brother. But they lost touch and now hes all grown up and has become a doctor. Hes achieved the kind of success shes always dreamed of and she cant help feeling like a total failure when hes around. Especially when it becomes apparent that while hes handsome, kind and patient, shes rapidly transforming into a hot mess.
