After her return from France, Lady Beatrice Ashford is told that her brother has already arranged a marriage for her in London.
She seizes a last chance at freedom, rushing into an impulsive adventure that ends with a handsome stranger pulling her from danger; she hides behind a governess’s identity while assuming he is only a merchant.
In a glittering London ballroom she meets him again and learns the truth: he is Rupert Sinclair, Duke of St. James, a notorious rake whose title arrives with whispers, threats, and a mother intent on his wedding.
Pressure from society and from Beatrice’s chosen suitor cannot keep them apart, and rumors of their private meetings soon threaten her good name.
They agree to a sham engagement to halt the gossip, yet staged devotion turns real just as an enemy seeking Rupert’s downfall moves against them.
