When her sister dies, Honora Bellamy discovers that her infant niece has been taken without warning.
She enters the household of Leopold Harcourt, Duke of Bellgrave, as a governess, intending to reclaim the child and disappear before her ruse is exposed.
Already burdened by grief and duties he never chose, Leopold finds his ordered existence shattered when a basket appears at his door with a baby girl inside.
The new nursemaid becomes a mystery he cannot set aside, and Honora’s scheme for survival draws her into a closeness she never planned to want.
Secrets and old vows between two families begin to surface, and the fragile refuge they have built starts to give way under the weight of society and deception.
