Four years ago my husband drove into the dark and never came back.
I kept his name on the sign. I kept the diner open. I kept going, because that’s what you do when there’s nobody left to stop for.
Then a biker walked in at closing and ordered pie he didn’t eat.
He barely speaks. He fixes things I can’t afford to fix. He watches the door like something’s coming — and when he finally tells me what he’s running from, it’s older than this country and it has nine names carved in stone.
He says he can only promise me today.
Today is more than the last man gave me.
But the men hunting him have worked out that a runner who’s finally stopped has something to lose — and they’ve found my parking lot.
