After years as a military combat dog handler and a DEA canine agent in Chicago, Jojo Kaufmann returns to Somerset County, Pennsylvania, with Trident, the Belgian Malinois who served at her side.
She was raised Amish and never joined the church; these days she guards a small-town bank and shares a house with her two elderly Amish uncles.
During a party for the Amish carpenters and local crews who built a new ski resort, a sniper fires from a chalet roof at the chairlift, killing seven people while Jojo and Trident are on the slope.
A grieving Amish mother asks Jojo to find the man who murdered her daughter, drawing her into the investigation led by Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Conor McCaffrey, only a week into his new post.
The killer picked his targets with care, and now the danger is aimed at Jojo: a bull turned loose in the pasture, a rifle round through her truck window, and headlights racing toward her on an empty road.
